There’s a lot of misinformation floating around about birth doulas, and honestly, it drives me a little crazy. If you’ve ever wondered, “Do I really need a doula?” but have been held back by something you’ve heard, let’s set the record straight. Here are some of the most common myths about doulas—debunked!
Myth #1: Doulas Only Support Home Births
Nope! A doula’s role is to support you wherever you choose to give birth—whether that’s at home, in a birth center, or in a hospital. In fact, hospital births are where doulas can be especially valuable, helping you navigate policies, advocate for your preferences, and provide comfort measures in a sometimes overwhelming environment.
Myth #2: A Doula Replaces Your Partner
Absolutely not! A doula enhances your partner’s role by providing guidance, reassurance, and hands-on techniques they might not be familiar with. Instead of replacing them, a doula helps them feel more confident and involved in the process. Think of us as a team!
Myth #3: Doulas Are Only for People Who Want a Natural Birth
Doulas support all kinds of births—whether you’re planning an unmedicated birth, an epidural, or even a scheduled cesarean. My job is to help you feel empowered and informed, no matter what your choices look like.
Myth #4: Doctors and Nurses Don’t Like Doulas
Most healthcare providers appreciate the role of a doula because we help improve the birth experience. We don’t make medical decisions or interfere with care; we provide continuous emotional and physical support that can lead to better outcomes. When we work as a team with your providers, everybody wins!
Myth #5: A Doula is Just an Expensive Luxury
The right doula is an investment in your birth experience. Studies show that having a doula can lead to shorter labors, fewer interventions, and higher satisfaction with your birth. And if you’re worried about cost, many doulas (myself included!) offer payment plans or sliding scale options to make support accessible.
